This canteen offers delicious vegetarian South Indian food in the brightly lit basement of the Ganesh temple. The most expensive item is $10 on their menu, their famous dosas run you a maximum of $6, and they have 16 varieties of it, as well as uthappams, yummy rice items like pongal/bisibelebath for $5 and sweets too. This no-frills place is a favorite among taxi drivers. They offer authentic, tasty vegetarian food and food is served fast. Their full combo dinner includes saffron rice/roti, 3 vegetable dishes, cucumber and a choice of sides for $7.99. Or for $4.50 you get rice with 2 vegetable dishes. Their $4.50 samosa chaat is delicious. They also offer kheer, Ras Malai, chai and coffee for $2. There is no place to sit down here, they have a narrow table where one can stand and eat. Highly recommend for when you feel broke/broke-ish.

Famous food cart offering lunch on Washington Square Park. It is run by Thiru Kumar who is very friendly and offers excellent service. Lines can get long as his fresh vegan food is very popular. Menu is short with several types of dosas, idly lunch, roti curry, samosas and veggie stuffed rotis and rolls but the flavor and quality is truly authentic.

Delicious inexpensive vegetarian Punjabi food, flavorful and generous portions. They offer an $8 lunch plate with 4 vegetable dishes. The parathas and naan are freshly made and delicious, as are the curries, especially the channa and saag. The owners are friendly and go out of the way to make you feel taken care of. There are only three small tables and some items on the menu may not be available, nevertheless highly recommended.

Delicious frankies, and unlike several other restaurants on this list- they have non-vegetarian options as well (chicken, lamb, shrimp). Very flavorful, tender meat, and not oily unlike their competitors.
