Fahavalo, Madagascar 1947

Chicago premiere! Marie Clémence Andriamonta-Paes in person! 2018, MARIE CLÉMENCE ANDRIAMONTA-PAES, FRANCE, 90 MIN. The little-known story of a post WWII insurrection by the indigenous population of Madagascar, an island nation off the coast of east Africa, becomes a multi-faceted walk through history in this film that is both ethnographic documentary and chronicle of a revolution. A French colony in 1947, the island had been promised independence by Charles de Gaulle, a reward for providing wartime manpower and assistance to the Allies. A failure to follow through touched off political chaos and a resulting brutal crackdown that pitched the sophisticated forces of France against Malagasy guerillas fighting with spears, machetes, and magic spells. Director Andriamonta-Paes captures the spirit of the times, then and now, with first-person testimonies, archival film and photographs, and an evocative use of music.
