Registered Nurse

The school is recognized across the country and around the world as a leader in providing instruction to children with dyslexia and is listed among the best schools in the New York City area. The School Nurse coordinates a school health program including the delivery of services to students in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. The employee must evaluate and perform health assessments, execute prescribed medical regimens and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require discretionary judgment and analysis. Duties are to be performed in accordance with the NYS Nurse Practice Act (State Education Law, Article 139) while also under the guidance of the NYS Center for School Health, NYS Department of Health and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Principal Accountabilities Performs health assessments for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children. Creates and maintains documentation of all treatment and medical services activity, including trends in illness. Confers with students, parents, and teachers regarding medical and referral treatment following confidentiality policies and regulations. Coordinates with local health agencies and medical treatment facilities, as necessary. Provides other assessments and treatments, as necessary to maintain a healthy school environment. Assistance with the Blood-borne Pathogen Exposure Control Policy and Plan in accordance with OSHA; provides ongoing training and keeps records as required. Assists with maintaining the inventory of supplies and material as needed in the nurse’s office; develops and monitors procedures for maintaining adequate supplies in all school first aid kits. Assists with establishing and maintaining medical and health services programs for the school. Maintains state-mandated student health forms and immunization records; submits annual NYS Immunization Survey Assists in the design of and teaching of student health and sex education classes, as needed. Assistance with the Public Access Defibrillation Program; responsible for the maintenance of AED’s. Knowledge of the Magnus Health Electronic Record System; collaborates with Magnus Health representatives regarding issues and system upgrades. Ongoing collaboration with Athletic Department and Athletic Trainers. Maintains School Accident/Incident Reports and facilitates information to parents/ guardians as needed. Position Criteria Required • Bachelor’s Degree • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in NY • Certified in CPR/AED and first aid • State licensing requirements must be met and maintained (i.e. child abuse & infection control) • Use a computer and various software applications • Ability to use basic office equipment • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with all constituents • Considerable knowledge of medical/ psychological disorders and treatment • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development • Working knowledge of public health issues and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social services agencies • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources • Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs Physical Requirements and Work Environment · Ability to sit, stand, bend and stoop for periods of time · Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally · Ability to work in a stressful environment · Exposure to patient element Previous school nurse experience preferred Principals only.
